Lot Description
[Art] (Braque, Georges) Char, René Émile. Le Soleil des Eaux
Paris: Henri Matarasso, 1949. First and limited edition, #179/200 copies, signed by Braque and char, with an additional inscription in French from Char to Maria Martins, "To Maria, whose work is inseparable from that of the poets who descend as deeply into their anguish as into their good fortune." 4to. Color aquatint frontispiece with 3 black and white aquatints in text, minor spotting along margins, offsetting; Loose sheets as issued in folded cardboard cover; publisher's slipcase, rubbing, soiling, hinges starting. Vallier 47.
Le Soleil des Eaux tells the story of a group of fishermen whose livelihoods are threatened by pollution runoff from a nearby factory, who then launch an attack against the factory in response. The play was performed with an all-star cast on 29 April 1948 and is considered to be one of the best of Char's works. Like Char, fellow surrealist Maria Martins was a devout anti-fascist who, along with Char and other members of New York's expatriate art community, decried Adolf Hitler's destruction and censorship of modern art.
