Hugh Clapperton (1788-1827) was a British naval officer and explorer, the first known European to visit the Hausa states of modern day Nigeria. He would perish during his second voyage of 1826-27 due to malaria, and his journal was returned to England by his servant Richard Lander, who published his captain's account posthumously, in 1829.
