Matthew Sutcliffe was an English clergyman and academic who served as chaplain to King James I and played a key role in the settlement of New England as an early backer of John Smith, who mentions Sutcliffe's financial assistance in his Generall Historie (1624); he was later appointed by King James to help dissolve the Virginia Company following the establishment of Virginia as a royal colony. A Treatise of Ecclesiasticall Discipline was written with the financial backing of William Bourchier, 3rd Earl of Bath, with the aim of attacking those who sought to introduce reforms into the Church of England.
