Jan Hus was a Czech theologian and philosopher who became a key figure in the Bohemian Reformation. In 1415 he was burned at the stake for heresy. His death was ultimately the catalyst for the Hussite Wars, with the Bohemian people moving further away from Church teachings and Pope Martin V issuing a decree authorizing the execution of any of Hus's supporters. Nearly six hundred years later Pope John Paul II issued a formal apology on behalf of the Church for Hus's execution and the cruel manner in which it was carried out.
