[Presidential] Monroe, James. Partially-Printed Document, signed
War Department (Washington, D.C), January 22, 1813. Bifolium, 10 x 7 1/2 in. (254 x 191 mm). Partially-printed document, signed by James Monroe as Secretary of State, appointing Johnathan Gifford an Ensign in the 25th Regiment of Infantry. Contemporary docketing on verso. Creasing from old folds, two small closed tears along same; scattered foxing; tape residue on last page from when mounted.
Accompanied by an autograph letter signed by Adjutant General of the United States Army, Thomas H. Cushing (1755-1822), dated January 26, 1813, transmitting Gifford's appointment and orders.
