Eloise was based on author Kay Thompson's childhood imaginary friend, with Thompson's goddaughter Liza Minnelli often suggested as a more direct inspiration. Over the following four years Thompson published an additional three books in the Eloise series before deciding that she had lost interest in the character; a posthumous book, Eloise Takes a Bawth, was published in 2002.
