Lot Description
[British Isles] Digges, Sir Dudley. The Compleat Ambassador...
London: Printed by Thomas Newcomb, 1655. Two works in one volume, bound with Cabala, Sive Scrinia Sacra, Mysteries of State and Government in Letters...1663. Folio (305 x 203 mm). Later full calf with spine rebacked in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands, lightly worn; very light spotting throughout; armorial bookplate of Charles William Hamilton Sotheby. Lowndes, 646; Wing D1453, C13.
Considered the "great authority on all that concerns the Anjou marriage" (DNB), The Compleat Ambassador chronicles the marriage negotiations between Queen Elizabeth I of England and Prince Francis Anjou of France from 1570-1581. Twice her suitor's age, Elizabeth was said to have ended the engagement due to fears of attempting to bear a child, though it is more commonly accepted that she did so in order to preserve England's sovereignty, a decision which ultimately led to her historical reputation as the "Virgin Queen."
