[Botanical] Our Garden Flowers


No place, no date (London, ca. mid-late 19th century). Folio. Pen and ink, pencil, and/or watercolor, on 17 leaves, rectos only. Comprising hand-drawn pictorial title-page within foliate border; four leaves of manuscript verse within foliate border; 12 full-page watercolor botanical drawings, each with manuscript at bottom in foliate lettering. Original full spruce green morocco, decorated in blind and in gilt, extremities and boards scuffed and rubbed; all edges gilt; printed moire silk endleaves; by Ackermann, 191 Regent St, London; bookseller's ticket on lower verso front free endpaper; scattered spotting; some leaves with thumb soiling.

A superb and highly finished hand-drawn botanical album, arranged by season, and with each floral watercolor illustration representing one month of the year. With accompanying sectional pages for each season containing verses from poems by Henry Wordsworth Longfellow, including excerpts from Autumn (1839), An April Day (1825), and Woods in Winter (1839).
