Lot Description
[Architecture] Laing, David. Hints for Dwellings, Consisting of Original Designs for Cottages, Farm-Houses, Villas, Etc.
London: S. Gosnell, 1801. First edition. Folio (298 x 241 mm). 34 plates. Contemporary quarter calf, rubbing resulting in some loss along extremities, front hinge starting; offsetting, toning, small contemporary pencil sketch opposite plate 21, some spotting throughout.
David Laing began his architecture career as an apprentice to John Soane before starting his own firm in 1796. Infamously, in 1812 he designed the New Custom House in London, which was completed in 1817 and collapsed three years later due to improper calculations and an inadequate foundation.
This lot is located in Chicago.
