Lot Description

[MILITIA]. Quarter plate ambrotype of a militia sergeant with sword and plumed shako.

Seated portrait of an unidentified militia sergeant holding a common militia pattern NCO sword diagonally across his lap, and wearing a regulation Model 1858 frock coat with militia pattern worsted fringe epaulettes. A Model 1851 shako bearing company letter "E" and red-tinted plumes rests on the table next to him. (Good clarity and contrast, few imperfections to image surface; unsealed.) Housed in a leatherette case (nearly fully separated at spine with cloth repair, with heavy surface wear throughout).

The sergeant's rectangular stamped militia belt plate likely depicts an American eagle, though it is difficult to decipher.

Estate of David O'Reilly, Old Bridge, New Jersey
