Lot Description
LUDINGTON, Marshall (1839-1919), comp. Uniform of the Army of the United States from 1774 to 1889.
[Washington, D.C.]: Published by the Quartermaster General, [ca. 1889]. Folio. 44 full-color illustrations (toning, many re-mounted.) Original half morocco with titles in gilt (rebacked preserving original spine, rubbing, corners mostly worn away, front free endpaper detached). Provenance: Charles Wheaton Abbot, Jr. (1860-1923), American military officer.
FIRST EDITION. Charles Wheaton Abbot, Jr. served as commander of the 1st Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War and would see action during the Philippine Insurrection shortly after the war's conclusion. His grandfather, Joel Abbot, was a veteran of the War of 1812 who in 1853 accompanied Commodore Matthew C. Perry on his expedition to Japan, which resulted in the end of Japan's longstanding isolationism and the signing of the Convention of Kanagawa the following year.
