Lot Description

[WESTERN AMERICANA]. Tintype of two heavily armed men, one with rare Merwin, Hulbert & Co. revolver.

3 5/8 x 2 1/4 in. tintype of two well-armed men standing before a simple studio backdrop. The subject at right has multiple weapons tucked in his belt, most notably a Merwin, Hulbert, and Co. open-top Pocket Army revolver with a long barrel, which is very rare to see in photographs of the period. A Smith and Wesson new-model revolver and knife are also tucked in his belt. The subject at left appears to be triple armed, with a Colt Navy Model 1851 percussion revolver and double-action revolver tucked in his belt as well as a spur-trigger revolver tucked in his suspender. A paper label with modern inscription affixed to verso suggests that one of the subjects was a sheriff of Sheridan Co., Oregon, although this cannot be confirmed.
