Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. 2 cabinet cards of Southwestern Indians, incl. "Apache Chief."

Bust portrait of an Apache man wearing an unusual feathered head piece and a handkerchief around his neck atop a western style shirt. Captioned in the negative, "Apache Chief 120." Pencil inscription on mount recto reads, "'Mangus.'" -- Full standing profile portrait of a Native man wearing a fur head piece, bells around his waist, knees, and ankles, and a tunic around his pelvic area. He stands before a painted backdrop depicting the sea. Mount recto embossed (most likely) for R. L. Kelly, Pierre, SD (parts indecipherable). Ink inscription beneath image reads, "Beauty Voice / Bravest to stand self torture for bravery. Real Indian. 1873. Faint pencil inscription to verso seems to provide the same information as recto. -- Together, 2 cabinet cards.
