Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. [SAVAGE & OTTINGER, photographers]. CDV of Shoshone Chief Washakie, ca 1865.
CDV on cardstock mount of Shoshone Chief Washakie seated in a chair, with a hat resting on his left knee. Uncredited, but originally photographed by Savage and Ottinger, ca 1865. He wears prominent earrings and a large medallion around his neck, which was given to Washakie by the President of the United States. With "Washakie" written in red ink in the top margin of the print, and additional penciled identification on mount below image.
Washakie (ca 1804-1900) was a lifelong friend to settlers of the American West, assisting them with travel through his treacherous homeland terrain. In 1876, he joined forces with the military as both a scout and warrior, serving under General George Crook to help push Crazy Horse into the Powder River Country. Praised by Presidents Grant and Arthur, Chief Washakie was buried with full military honors.
