Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Stereoview of Peter La Cherre, Head Chief of the Pawnee Indians by CARBUTT.
Peter La Cherre, Head Chief of the Pawnee Indians. Lacking a photographer's credit on the mount, the negative was taken by John Carbutt during the Fisk Expedition in 1867. Stereoview on cardstock mount, with manuscript notation on verso, "Presented to Mary E. Jenks by her brother...Frank Jenks...Cherry Valley, Illinois, Dec. 25, 1868."
Peter La Cherre, or Peta-la-sha-ro (1797-1874) was one of the most celebrated Pawnee chiefs as well as a respected warrior. He was also opposed to any violation of the Table Creek Treaty, his signature being the first on the document.
