Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Postwar photograph of men at "The Crater," at Petersburg, VA.

3 x 3 1/4 in. photograph mounted to 6 x 4 1/2 in. page or cardstock sheet (image lightly toned, with some spotting; mount with heavy spotting and wear from being torn along left edge). Ink inscription beneath image reads, "The Crater, Petersberg [sic]."

Research suggests that this photograph was taken circa 1870, and that the rebuilt Taylor farm is visible in the distance. Erosion has taken a heavy toll on the area in the foreground of the image. A stereoview version of this photograph is credited to David Anderson and was published as part of his "Views of Richmond & Vicinity, & Mountain Scenery of Virginia & West Va." series.
