Lot Description
ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. (1882-1945). TLS as President, regarding his stamp collection.
ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. (1882-1945). Typed letter signed ("Franklin D. Roosevelt"), as President, "The White House", Washington, [D.C.], 27 October 1938. Addressed to Mr. William Wolff of New York, New York. 1p, 7 x 9 in. (creasing at center fold, light soil). Accompanied by matching transmittal envelope.
Roosevelt acknowledges receipt of "an interesting cover for [his] collection" from Wolff, and thanks him for thoughtfulness in sending it.
[With: ] Typed letter, unsigned, regarding a cover [not present] franked by the 1881 first issue stamps of the Republic of Haiti, which the author presented to the President for his collection. 24 October 1938. 1p, 8 1/2 x 11 in. (toning, scattered marks, creasing).
Franklin D. Roosevelt was an avid stamp collector who aroused nationwide interest in stamp collecting when, during the 1930s, the White House released numerous photographs of him working on his stamp collection. After his death, the collection was consigned to Harmer Galleries of New York and, after touring the United States, was sold at two 1947 auctions.
