Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] 75+ tintypes and ambrotypes of civilians, incl. occupational and outdoor views.

Lot comprised of approx. 79 tintypes and ambrotypes of men, women, and children. Plate sizes include half plate (1), sixth plate (12), ninth plate (50), and CDV-size (16).

Highlights include: Half plate outdoor ambrotype of a woman and child standing on the front porch of a large residence (some emulsion loss). Under mat, preserver, and cover glass, no case. -- 16 loose, CDV-sized tintypes, most approx. 3 1/2 x 2 3/8 in. Subject matter ranges from studio portraits and occupational views to portraits of rough and tumble characters (condition ranges from fair to very good). -- 2 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. oval portrait of a lovely young woman on milk glass, housed in velvet case (with surface wear and soiling). -- Sixth plate ambrotype of a woman wearing a fancy dress with lace around her shoulders. Housed in Union case, The Deer and Pine Tree [Berg 1-116] (wear to hinge). -- Approx. 14 ninth plate and sixth plate portraits of children of varying ages, including infants and toddlers with attitude. -- 28 ninth plate ambrotypes of men, women, and children, each with mat, preserver, and cover glass, most reportedly taken from a "friendship frame," as per consignor (generally the ambrotypes in poor to fair condition, with significant wear to images).

Together, approx. 79 and tintypes. Conditions vary.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
