Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 22 cased images, incl. daguerreotypes of men, women, and children in varying poses.
Quarter plate daguerreotype portrait of a bearded man holding two young girls on his lap, likely a father and his daughters. (Tarnishing to edges, soft focus to child on viewer's left, father's hat is nearly indecipherable as it fades into the background; unsealed, no preserver present.) Housed loosely in a fully separated leatherette case (split at spine, with losses and other separations). Ink inscribed note affixed to cover glass reads, "Julia B. Cutler age 3 / Harrison [Cutler]." -- Ninth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young girl with what appears to be a small bird perched on her hand. The bird is lightly tinted in yellow. (Tarnishing to edges, wiping and scratching, spotting to mat; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case. Partly indecipherable pencil inscription to case interior reading, in part: "11 years / Feb 1860." -- 2 3/8 x 3 1/2 in. loose tintype portrait of a man wearing a tall, wide-brimmed hat and jacket, with his arm in a sling. (Plate with significant bends and heavy creases, wear to edges.) Unhoused, but accompanied by the remnants of a paper sleeve marked for Chapman's Tintype Gallery of Bradley beach, NJ on verso. -- And 19 others, including one quarter plate daguerreoytpe, one quarter plate tintype, 6 sixth plate daguerreotypes, 7 sixth plate ambrotypes, one sixth plate tintype, one ninth plate daguerreotype, one ninth plate ambrotype, and one ninth plate tintype. Some without full cases. Conditions vary. -- Together, 22 images.
