Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 18 assorted daguerreotypes incl. half plate examples by GERMON and WHITEHURST.

Half plate portrait of a young man with a bushy goatee and sideburns. (Tarnishing to edges, light clouding to image, spotting to mat.) Housed in a fully separated leatherette case (significant wear including large split to back cover). Brass mat stamped on either side below image "W. L. GERMON / 168 CHEST. ST. PHILA." -- Half plate seated portrait of a finely dressed woman wearing a long polka-dotted neck ribbon and gold-highlighted dangling earrings. (Heavy wiping, spotting, and other imperfections to plate, heavy spotting to mat.) Housed in a half leatherette case (heavy surface wear/loss). Brass mat stamped "WHITEHURST." -- Sixth plate seated portrait of a man wearing a heavy double-breasted coat with thick collar and large buttons. (Significant spotting, some tarnishing to edges.) Housed in a pressed paper case (nearly split at spine, significant wear/loss). -- Ninth plate image featuring a painting of a woman wearing an off-the-shoulder dress with decolette. (Tarnishing to edges, light contrast.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (surface wear). -- And 14 others, including 3 quarter plate examples, 10 sixth plate examples (one slightly smaller and housed in an oval velvet case), and one ninth plate example. Conditions vary. -- Together, 18 assorted daguerreotypes.
