Lot Description
LEWIS, Sinclair (1885-1951). Typed letter signed ("Sinclair Lewis"), to Neil McCullough Clark, St. James, South Wales, 24 February 1933.
One page, 8vo (178 x 140 mm), on personal letterhead, old folds; hinge mounted; framed.
"I HAVE MERELY WRITTEN OF THE MIDWEST AS I HAVE KNOWN IT."
Lewis writes in response to an interview with the recipient, discussing the author's Midwest roots and how they have influenced his writing. In his highly acclaimed 1920 satirical novel, Main Street, Lewis critiques the conformity and narrow-mindedness of small-town life in the American Midwest, helping shape the literary image of the region as both culturally conservative and deeply emblematic of broader American values.
