[HOWARD, Oliver Otis, Gen. (1830-1909), his copy]. -- HALLIDAY, Samuel (1812-1897). The Little Street Sweeper; or, Life Among The Poor. New York: Phinney, Blakeman & Mason, 1861.


8vo. Engraved frontispiece. Full contemporary brown calf, tooled in blind and in gilt, morocco spine label, all edges gilt; yellow endpapers; (extremities lightly worn). Provenance: General O.O. Howard (printed book-plate on front paste-down); additional ownership signature below presentation.

PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED, on front free endpaper: "Genl Howard with warmest regards of the Author New York May 10/66." Oliver Otis Howard was a Union Army general who served in multiple commands, seeing action at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and in Sherman's Carolinas Campaign. Dubbed the "Christian General" for his deep evangelical piety, he was also a head of the Freedman's Bureau during Reconstruction.
