Lot Description

HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). In Einem Andern Land. Annemarie Horschitz, translator. Berlin: Ernst Rowohlt, 1931.

8vo. Original light gray cloth stamped in light blue and lettered in red, top edge stained blue (spine a bit toned). Provenance: From the collection of Ruth White Lowry (1884-1974), Hemingway's cousin and Kansas City native.

Later German edition of A Farewell to Arms. SIGNED BY HEMINGWAY.

The title for the German edition, first translated in 1930, is taken from the epigraph quoted on p.[6]: Barnardine: (Thou hast committed). Barabos: (Fornication: but that was in another country; and besides the wench is dead"). The novel was included in the infamous Nazi book burnings of 1933, for its brutally honest portrayal of war, love, and loss that was seen as defeatist and contrary to the glorified vision of war promoted by the Nazi regime. Hanneman D89.
