Lot Description
[TRAVEL & EXPLORATION]. CHURCHILL, Awnsham (d. 1728) and John (fl. 1695). A Collection of Voyages and Travels, some now first printed from original manuscripts, others now first published in English. London: Churchill for John Walthoe [&c], 1732.
6 volumes, folio (349 x 229 mm). List of subscribers with engraved arms of subscribers, 2 engraved portraits, 165 engraved plans, maps, views and diagrams, many double-page, some folding and mounted on guards, and numerous engraved illustrations in the text. (Front black in vol.1 detached.) Contemporary calf, covers with single gilt fillet border, spines in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands, morocco lettering-pieces gilt in second, gilt-lettering in third, others gilt-tooled, edges speckled red (joints splitting, spine ends worn, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Robert Raymond, 2nd Baron Raymond, ca 1717–1756 (bookplate).
SECOND, ENLARGED EDITION, of this extensive collection of voyages to America, China, Turkey, Ceylon, Africa, India, Persia, and elsewhere. Originally published in 1704 in four volumes, this edition includes an additional two volumes. By the third edition, published in 1744-47, the work had grown to eight volumes. According to Sabin, Churchill's collection "is very valuable; its place cannot be supplied by recurring to the original works, as a great part of them are first published in it from the manuscript.” cf. Borba de Moraes, pp.181-5; cf. Hill 295; cf. NMM 33; Sabin 13015 and 13016 (collation differs at places).
