Lot Description
[TRAVEL & EXPLORATION]. A General Collection of Voyages and Discoveries, made by the Portuguese and the Spaniards, during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. London: W. Richardson, J. Bew, et al, 1789.
4to (260 x 203 mm). 4 engraved plates, 4 engraved folding maps. (A few maps with marginal closed tears, one map toned along fold, some light spotting.) Contemporary tree calf (rebacked, lower fore-corners renewed, upper fore-corners worn, front hinge reinforced). Provenance: Reverend Dr. Alexander John Scott (1768-1840), an Anglican chaplain who served in the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He was Horatio Nelson's chaplain at the Battle of Trafalgar, and had previously served as his private secretary. Scott was a close friend of Nelson and was with him as he died aboard the HMS Victory (bookplate); Boies Penrose Jr. (1902-1976), author, collector, and travel historian (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of the rare, anonymous collection of voyages including those of Cada Mosto, Dias, Vasco de Gama, Columbus, Vespucci, Cortereal, Cabral, de Solis, Cortes, Albuquerque, Magellan and others. Of the five maps listed in the Directions to the Binder, that of the West Indies is not present in this and other copies, and may not have been issued. Cox I:22; Hill 688; Sabin 26875.
