3 volumes, comprising: text, 2 volumes, 8vo, ; atlas, oblong 4to. Text: folding table; Atlas: 7 celestial plates printed in red and black. (Some marginal toning.) Text: Original wrappers printed in red and black (spines sunned); Atlas: contemporary half cloth, marbled boards (spine perished).

FIRST EDITION. Gustave Schelegel, a celebrated Dutch sinologist and field naturalist, began studying Chinese at the age of nine and made his first trip to China at the age of seventeen. In 1866, he published a monograph on the Tiandihiu (Heaven and Earth Society), but he is known for his magnum opus, his Dutch-Chinese dictionary, published in 4 volumes between 1882 and 1891.
