Lot Description
[FLAGS-POLITICS]. 34-star "Garfield and Arthur" campaign flag. Ca 1880.
22 1/2 in. x 45 1/2 in. cotton flag with 34 printed stars configured in an unusual pattern comprised of 8/8/8/8 horizontal rows with two additional stars near the hoist. The hoist is cotton, with two small pinholes. A 22 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. piece of cloth is stitched at bottom with legend printed on each side, "Garfield and Arthur." Overall, 22 1/2 x 51 in.
The 34-star flag was originally in use from 1861-1863, indicating that this is a repurposed example made in support of Republican nominees James Garfield and Chester Arthur for the 1880 presidential campaign.
RARE: Not listed in Collins' Threads of History.
Provenance: Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, M.D.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
