6 stereoviews on assorted mounts, showing various funerary events and elements around the city of Springfield, including:
A front corner view of the State House thoroughly draped in mourning, showing the flag at half mast. Verso with imprint reading, "Photographed by A. C. Townsend, Springfield, Mass." -- An opposite front corner view of the State House, showing a crowd forming on the street around a covered archway. Uncredited but inscribed "State House Springfield" in ink on verso. -- A view from the State House (likely taken from the stairs) showing a crowd of people lining the street opposite, making way for the hearse (not viewable here) to enter the gate for the State House. Many people can be seen hanging out of the windows and standing on the rooftops of buildings on the opposite side of the street. Uncredited, but inscribed "Arrival of the body of the President at Springfield, Ill" in ink on verso. -- Another view from the State House grounds, showing the opposite side of the street and the long procession of mourners making their way along the sidewalk and under the archway leading into the State House. Soldiers stand interspersed to keep order. The African American gentleman wearing a top hat and leaning on his cane visible here is the Reverend Henry Brown, who was asked to lead Lincoln's horse in the funeral procession. Mount recto features paper label with image title: Passing into the State House to See the Corpse and copyright statement crediting and dating the image to Ridgway Glover, 22 May 1865. Verso bears paper label partly accomplished in ink, "No. 2 Passing in to view the Corpse," with credit to Schreiber & Glover. -- A low, frontal view of the State House prominently featuring the vertically-draped columns through which a line of mourners files out onto the street. Mount recto features image title, Passing out of the State House After Seeing the Corpse, and copyright crediting and dating the image to Ridgeway Glover, 22 May 1865. -- And a rare street view along Springfield's square, with the wrapped columns of the Sangamon County Court House visible in the distance. Uncredited, but inscribed "View on Washington St. Springfield Ill" in ink on verso. -- Together, 6 stereoviews.
