Lot Description
[LINCOLN]. SWEENY, Thomas T. (1833-1891), photographer. Monument Square and Pavillion, Cleveland, O., Remains of President Lincoln lying in State.
6 5/8 x 3 7/8 in. albumen photograph on 7 3/4 x 5 3/4 in. cardstock mount with thick mourning border, credit to Sweeny, and title/caption printed beneath image.
An exterior view of Abraham Lincoln's funeral passing through Cleveland, Ohio, capturing the pagoda-style tent pavilion in which Lincoln's coffin was displayed as well as the horse-drawn hearse.
Cleveland's noteworthy demonstration included the only outdoor venue for mourners to view Lincoln's body, which allowed over ten thousand people to pass by the coffin per hour.
"The structure in the park had been an inspiration. The size of the crowd was only limited by what all outdoors could hold...All the other viewings had been held in the biggest buildings the cities could offer but all had been cramped and thousands outside were always disappointed. Only Cleveland had thought of an outdoor viewing that could satisfy everyone." (Twenty Days, p. 221).
