Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 9-star American parade flag. Ca 1876-1900.
2 1/8 x 4 in. printed cotton flag, with central star surrounded by a circle of 8 stars. Housed in folk-art carved wooden frame, 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. overall.
The nine stars on the flag may represent the 100th anniversary of New Hampshire statehood. It has also been suggested that the flag may have been used by a Confederate sympathizer, with the nine stars symbolizing the first nine states to secede from the Union at the beginning of the Civil War.
Provenance: Collection of Jeffrey Kenneth Kohn, MD.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
