6 7/8 x 4 1/4 in. albumen photograph on 8 5/8 x 6 in. cardstock mount. Credited to Haas & Peale on photograph and mount. Numbered and titled on applied paper label on recto. Undated, but taken ca July-August 1863.
Central, but at a distance, in this image is a make-shift observation tower that the troops have built from a hill of ruins, where the Charleston Lighthouse once stood. Tents appear below, to the viewer's left, and soldiers stand scattered around the tower, on the slope, and on the ground. African American soldiers are featured here most prominently to the right foreground.
