Lot Description

US Pattern 1858 Mounted Artillery Jacket with Sergeant's Chevrons and Brass Epaulets.
American Civil War

US Pattern 1858 Mounted Services Jacket made from indigo dyed blue wool broadcloth with an undyed cotton muslin lining, padded chest and red branch of service herringbone pattern tape trim. Jacket features five-piece construction with a 2.25" standing collar with four buttons, a twelve button front with one button missing, belt support pillows on the rear, functional two-button cuffs and a hook closure at the neck. Buttons are cuff sized general service eagles. Lining of right arm hole (armscye) is stamped with the contractor name I HABER & CO/NEW YORK/5 NOV 64 and with the size stamp 4. The left armscye is stamped with an illegible name and the size mark 4. The middle rear of the coat is stamped 167, 44B and 42, probably size markings from post-war use, possibly as a costume. Hand sewn buttonholes with moderate wear and thread loss, hand stitching at armscye, with two small patches cut out and replaced with filler fabric, probably to remove inspection markings from when the jacket was sold as surplus in the post-Civil War era. Isaac Haber & Co was a New York City and Newark, NJ based clothing manufacturer who received a number of contracts to produce uniforms during the Civil War. According to the Directory of American Military Goods Dealers & Makers 1785-1915, in addition to numerous other contracts for jackets, pants and even Zouave uniforms, Haber received a November 1864 contract for 15,000 artillery jackets, which this appears to be an example of. The jacket includes a set of removable brass epaulettes and has a set of red worsted wool herringbone tape sergeant's stripes attached to both arms.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
