Remington Jenks Naval Carbine
Mexican American War - American Civil War
.54 caliber. 25" round barrel secured by a two flat brass screw-retained barrel bands. SN: 1/15. Browned and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion breechloading rifled carbine with the Maynard automatic priming system, groove rear sight, no front sight and sling ring in trigger plate. Breech marked: W. Jenks and in five lines: USN/RP/P/1847/CAST-STEEL. Mule-ear lock marked in three lines: REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y. Interior of breech lever marked 1/15 and interior of primer system numbered 683. A single slightly soft cartouche is on the counterpane appears to be a script JS. Carbine is in the standard "modified" configuration with the oval rather than round loading aperture and a rifled bore. One of 1,000 Jenks Mule Ear Navy Carbines manufactured by Remington ca 1847-48 which incorporated the Maynard automatic priming system into the lock. A scarce naval carbine. {ANTIQUE}
