Jenks and in five lines: USN/RP/P/1847/CAST-STEEL. Mule-ear lock marked in three lines: REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y. Interior of breech lever marked 1/15 and interior of primer system numbered 683. A single slightly soft cartouche is on the counterpane appears to be a script JS. Carbine is in the standard "modified" configuration with the oval rather than round loading aperture and a rifled bore. One of 1,000 Jenks Mule Ear Navy Carbines manufactured by Remington ca 1847-48 which incorporated the Maynard automatic priming system into the lock. A scarce naval carbine. {ANTIQUE}
