Lot Description
5th Model Burnside Carbine
American Civil War
.54 caliber. 21" round barrel secured by a single spring-retained barrel band. SN: 11878. Blued and color case hardened finish, smooth walnut stock and forend. Single shot percussion carbine with tilting block receiver, L-shaped leaf rear sight, pinched front sight blade, sling swivel in toe of stock and saddle bar and ring opposite lock. Lock marked in two lines behind the hammer BURNSIDE RIFLE CO/PROVIDENCE, RI. Chamber marked in two lines BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864. Barrel marked in a single weak line forward of the rear sight CAST STEEL 1864. Two weak script GC (George Curtis) inspection cartouches are present at the reverse wrist. Obverse butt stamped with a large number of "2" marks, reverse of butt with a deeply carved CO E marking. Matching serial numbers on receiver and breech block. This carbine was not located in the Springfield Research Service database, however the closest guns bracketing this number are #11826 which was issued to Company K of the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry and #11891 which was issued to Company H of the 6th Ohio Cavalry. {ANTIQUE}
