Lot Description
US Model 1828 (M1816 Type III) Flintlock Musket by Harpers Ferry
Mexican American War
.69 caliber. 42" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, barrel retained by three flat, spring retained bands, full-length walnut musket stock. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock musket with no rear sight, missing the brass blade front sight, socket bayonet lug on top of barrel, sling swivels and a short of full-length button head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US forward of the cock and in three vertical lines HARPERS/FERRY/1838. Breech plug tang dated 1838 as well and breech with usual V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks. The mating number "1" appears on many parts. Upper band replaced with a second spring hole drilled, somewhat ill-fitting and mismatched with the number "6". No cartouches or inspection marks are visible in the wood. Lock remains in original flint, barrel appears to be as well, although the touchhole is over sized and was clearly drilled straight through at some point in time. Harpers Ferry never produced the Model 1835/40 musket as Springfield did, and continued to produce the 1816 pattern musket (M1828 in this case) until they transitioned to making Model 1842 percussion muskets. {ANTIQUE}
