Fine US Model 1866 Infantry Rifle aka 2nd Allin Conversion
Indian Wars
.50-70. 36.625" barrel secured by three solid convex spring-retained barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, color casehardened lock casehardened beech block, iron furniture, full-length walnut stock. Single shot breechloading "trapdoor" alteration of a Civil War era rifle musket with the M1866 leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight blade and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a jag head cleaning and clearing rod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/U.S. forward of the hammer, dated 1864 at the tail. Breech block with 1866/{Eagle Head} marking and another {Eagle Head} at the left rear of the breech. Counterpane with a crisp script HSH cartouche, the mark of Springfield Arsenal inspector Henry S. Hill. A really fine example of a US Model 1866 Infantry Rifle. {ANTIQUE}
