Lot Description

Whitney Navy Revolver
American Civil War

.36 caliber. 7.75" octagonal barrel. SN: 23678. No finish, brass triggerguard, two-piece smooth walnut grips. Single action percussion revolver with Colt style toggle link loading lever, frame groove rear sight and brass post front sight. Top of barrel with two-line WHITNEY/NEW HAVEN marking. Matching serial numbers on loading lever, under barrel, and in right grip, left grip number illegible as is the number on the rear face of the cylinder. This serial number is in the range of Whitney Navy revolvers delivered to the US Navy during 1864, many of which received no inspection marks. According the very incomplete records in the Springfield Research Service serial number books, the closest numbered Whitney Navy to this gun is #23375, which was derived to the Navy. {ANTIQUE}
