Lot Description
Scarce P.S. Justice U.S. Model 1860 Cavalry Officer's Saber
American Civil War
32.5" single-edged blade with 24.25" median fuller, 1.125" wide at ricasso. Blade 1.15" wide at the ricasso. 38.75" in overall length. 6" hilt with plain cast brass two-branch guard with knuckle bow and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Guard with simple lip on face. Grooved wooden grip covered in shagreen with 13 wraps of twisted wire. Blade etched with liberty cap in sunburst, floral themes, and crossed U.S. flags with the motto STAND BY THE UNION. Obverse ricasso, marked P.S. JUSTICE/PHILADA. Iron mounted steel scabbard with iron throat secured by a domed slotted screw and with two suspension rings. Scabbard appears to be from an earlier contract Justice enlisted cavalry saber and is about 4" longer than the blade. Plain hilted cavalry officer's sabers with etched blades are not unknown, although Justice cavalry officer sabers are quite scarce in and of themselves.
