Lot Description
Two US Model 1840 Artillery Sabers with Scabbards, 1st and 2nd Patterns
American Civil War
1) Ames Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber. 32" curved, single edged blade with 24.5" stopped median fuller. Blade 1.25" wide at ricasso. 37.75" overall length with 5.75" hilt. Brass guard with knuckle bow, forward swept disc quillon and oval brass pommel cap. Hilt with wood grip covered in leather and with 17 wraps of twisted wire. Blade marked with Ames "scroll mark" on reverse ricasso and US/JCW/1865 on the obverse. Obverse knuckle bow with JCW inspection, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector James C Watson. Saber is accompanied by the correct pattern iron scabbard with dual iron suspension rings that is marked with a JCW inspection on the drag.
2) Unmarked Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber of the 1st production type with recessed guard face and no scabbard throat. 32" curved, single edged blade with 25" stopped median fuller. Blade 1.25" wide at ricasso. 37.125" overall length with 5.5" hilt. Brass guard with knuckle bow, forward swept disc quillon and oval brass pommel cap. Hilt with wood grip covered in leather and with 17 wraps of twisted wire. Blade marked unmarked other than the date 1860 on the reverse ricasso. Saber is accompanied by the correct pattern iron scabbard with dual iron suspension rings without a throat and without inspection marks.
