Lot Description
**J. Purdey & Sons Side Lock 12 Gauge Best Shotgun, #1 of a Pair
12 Gauge. 29.5" barrels. SN: 18410. Blued barrels, color casehardened receiver, checkered straight grip walnut stock with checkered butt and checkered forend. 2.75" chambers, bores choked cylinder and modified, 14.75" length of pull, 1.625" drop at comb and 2.625" drop at heel. Side lock double barrel side by side assisted opening shotgun with automatic ejectors, double triggers and sidling thumb safety. Side locks marked J. PURDEY & SONS and engraved with tight foliate banknote scrolls with the receiver, tang and standing breeches engraved ensuite. Water table, barrels and operating lever are all numbered "1", indicating that this was originally part of a matched pair of guns. Barrel rib marked J. PURDEY & SONS: AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL. Bottom of receiver marked PURDEY'S/PATENT. Standard London proof, gauge and inspection marks on the water table and barrels. No buttplate or pad, butt is simply checkered wood. A classic bespoke gun from the finest English shotgun maker, which has seen real world use and would no doubt be a joy to take to the field. {C&R}
