Lot Description
US Model 1850 Staff & Field Officers Sword by Horstmann
American Civil War
34.25" single edged spear point blade, 1.15" wide at ricasso with a 24.5" stopped median fuller. Overall length 40.25". 6" hilt with gilt cast brass guard with US in the face, grooved wooden grip covered in shagreen with 16 wraps of multi-strand wire. Obverse ricasso etched W.H/HORSTMANN/& SONS/PHILADELPHIA. Blade decorated with beautifully acid etched flowing foliate, patriotic and martial motifs, including a large US as the central panel on the reverse, and a {Spread Winged Engle} and a ribbon with E PLURIBUS UNUM on the obverse. A red Moroccan leather throat washer is present at the base of the blade, on the face of the guard. The sword is accompanied by a gilt brass mounted browned steel scabbard.
