Lot Description
Fine Clauberg US Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword Retailed by JCF Deecken of New York
American Civil War
31.75" slightly curved single-edged blade with spear point tip and 20.5" stopped median fuller. Blade 1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 37.5" 5.75" hilt with gilt cast brass guard and grooved wooden grip covered in shagreen with 13 wraps of twisted mulit-strand wire. Reverse ricasso marked W CLAUBERG / SOLINGEN around their trademark. Obverse ricasso marked J.C.F.D/NY., the mark of New York City military outfitter and retailer John Frederick George Deecken. Spine etched IRON PROOF. Blade decorated with acid etched patriotic and foliate motifs with a US on the reverse in the central panel and a {Spread Winged Eagle}/US on the obverse in the central panel. A white buff leather throat washer is present on the face of the guard. The sword is accompanied by its gilt brass mounted leather scabbard with dual suspension ring, which is unmarked.
