Providence Tool Contract US Model 1861 Rifle Musket
American Civil War

.58 caliber. 40" round barrel. NSN. Arsenal bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading military rifle musket with M1861 three-leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked in three lines U {Spread-Winged Eagle} S/PROVIDENCE TOOL Co/PROVIDENCE, RI and dated 1864 at the tail. Matching 1864 date on breech with V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs. Correct Providence Tool eagle head with beak pointed in towards breech, correct Providence Tool "shadowed" dual line US mark on lock and buttplate tang. Correct script CRM and OWA cartouches on stock flat. Providence Tool delivered some 70,000 US Model 1861 rifle muskets on three contracts, dated July 23, 1861, November 26, 1861 and May 1, 1864. This gun one of the 32,000 delivered against the first two contracts with the early style lock markings and 1861 pattern rear sight. {ANTIQUE}
