Lot Description
Unmarked US Model 1861 Contract Rifle Musket Attributed to Whitney
American Civil War
.60 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, including the forend cap, walnut musket stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with M1861 pattern 3-leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a swelled shank, tulip head ramrod. Lock unmarked except for the date 1864 at the tail. Barrel undated and unmarked except for a W and a 3 on the upper left angled flat of the breech and a T on the end of the breech plug tang. The octagonal breech section is longer and more pronounced than on armory pattern M1861 rifle muskets, suggesting it is one of the English made barrels used by Whitney on many of state contract "Good & Serviceable" arms. Barrel bands with "U" marks, buttplate without a "US" on it. No cartouches or marks on the counterpane. A nice example of one of Whitney's unmarked variant M1861 Rifle Muskets. {ANTIQUE}
