Lot Description
Fenian Marked Bridesburg Contract US Model 1863 Rifle Musket
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three rounded screw clamping barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, color casehardened lock, iron furniture, full-length walnut musket stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with M1861 three leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and straight shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread Winged Eagle} and in two lines U.S./BRIDESBURG forward of the hammer. Dated 1864 at tail of lock and top of breech. Flat faced bolster with {Spread Winged Eagle} marking Standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs on breech. A pair of clear script cartouches are present opposite the lock. The GEC of George E Chamberlin and the CAM of an unknown inspector, whose mark is also found on Colt 1860 Army Revolvers and Smith Carbines. The stock is additionally marked with the block IN, supposedly standing for "Irish Nation". The mark indicates the gun was one acquired by the Fenians for their ill-fated uprising and invasion of Canada in an attempt to obtain freedom, self governance and self determination for Ireland. {ANTIQUE}
