American Civil War

Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with US M1861 pattern leaf rear sight, Barleycorn front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivel and straight shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/U.S. and S.N.&W.C.T./FOR/MASSACHUSETTS forward of the hammer and dated 1863 at the tail. Breech with matching 1863 date and standard V/P/{Eagle Head} on the left angled flat. A tiny G.A.W. block letter inspection is also present on the counterpane. A weak RHB cartouche is present in the belly of the stock, forward of the triggerguard. These cartouches are normally associated with Alfred Jenks (Bridesburg) contract rifle muskets. The Norris & Clement contract rifle muskets were produced specifically for the state of Massachusetts circa 1863-1864 with 13.001 delivered between December of 1863 and December of 1864. {ANTIQUE}
