Lot Description

US Springfield Model 1855 Rifle Musket Dated 1859
American Civil War

.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, brass nose cap, full-length walnut musket stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with Maynard automatic tape primer, M1858 three-leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread Winged Eagle} on the tape primer magazine door and in two lines U.S./SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer. Dated 1859 at tail of lock and top of breech. Standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs on breech. A legible script JS cartouche is present opposite the lock, the mark of Springfield Arsenal inspector James Stillman, as well as the script ESA of Master Armorer Erskine Allin. Top of comb with rack number 10 stamped in it, top of buttplate tang with rack number 35 stamped in it and rack number 35 stamped in obverse butt. The initials JHTC are neatly carved into the top rear of the obverse butt. {ANTIQUE}
