Lot Description
US Springfield Model 1855 Rifle Musket Dated 1859
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture including the nose cap, full-length walnut musket stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with Maynard automatic tape primer, M1858 rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread Winged Eagle} on the tape primer magazine door and in two lines U.S./SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer. Dated 1859 at tail of lock and top of breech. Standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs on breech. A clear script JS cartouche is present opposite the lock, the mark of Springfield Arsenal inspector James Stillman, there is no master armorer's final inspection cartouche, which is for some reason not uncommon on some of these M1855 Rifle Muskets. {ANTIQUE}
