Lot Description
Two Spencer Rifle Socket Bayonets and a Sharps Rifle Saber Bayonet
American Civil War
1) Spencer Rifle Socket Bayonet. 18" blade with 16" face flute, unmarked at ricasso. 3" socket with an overall length of 20.875". Nominal muzzle diameter is .817". No scabbard is present.
2) Spencer Rifle Socket Bayonet. 18.5" blade with 16" face flute, unmarked at ricasso. 3" socket with an overall length of 20.125". Nominal muzzle diameter is .817". A small "L" inspection mark is present forward of the mortise cut. No scabbard is present.
3) Sharps Rifle Saber Bayonet. 21.75" semi-Yataghan blade with 15" fuller. Overall length 26.625". Blade 1.21" wide at ricasso. 4.75" cast brass hilt with 17 grasping grooves. Mussle ring diameter is .817". Mortise cut for 1" guide lead on lug. Serial number 40319 on top of hilt. Obverse ricasso with Ames scroll mark, reverse ricasso dated 1861. No scabbard is present. This serial number falls in the range of Sharps Rifles issued to the 5th Michigan Infantry.
