Lot Description

Fine Martially Marked US Model 1860 Spencer Rifle
American Civil War

.56-56 Spencer caliber. 30" round barrel. SN: 8862. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend secured by three solid, spring-retained barrel bands. Lever action, manually cocked repeating rifle with seven round magazine in butt, military ladder rear sight, German silver front sight blade in base that doubles as the lug for a socket bayonet, and sling swivels on the middle band and in toe of stock. Top of receiver marked in three lines: SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO BOSTON MASS/PAT'D MARCH 6 1860. Stock with a vertically stamped script HHH (Henry H Hamilton) cartouche on the reverse wrist followed by a horizontal script DAP (Dwight A Perkins). Retains the correct pattern magazine follower tube in the butt with a smooth base. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this rifle, but the closest one, #8807, was issued to Company G of the 8th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry. This is a fairly high condition and very attractive example of a US Civil War martially marked Spencer rifle that shows real world use, but no abuse and has escaped any post-war modifications or alterations. {ANTIQUE}
